Starfighter is an 18+ webcomic by HamletMachine which ran from 2008 to 2020, first on DeviantArt and later on its own website. It's a dark sci-fi story about a Starfighter crew, navigator Abel and fighter Cain, and their erotic relationship. While HamletMachine, a western creator, uses the term queer to describe the comic, rather than boys love or yaoi, it's perfectly suited to fans of the genre.
In 2014, Date Nighto (the same company behind Hustle Cat) worked with HamletMachine to create an 18+ visual novel based on the Starfighter universe. The game, Starfighter: Eclipse, was funded through Kickstarter, where it raised over twice its original goal.
Starfighter: Eclipse stars Helios, a fighter newly paired with Selene, his navigator. Abel and Cain from the Starfighter comic also feature as characters, along with comic character Deimos and game character Hayden. Selene and Hayden each have an individual route, and there are also Cain/Abel/Helios, Cain/Selene/Helios, and Cain/Deimos/Helios scenes to unlock, because why have one threesome when you can have three?
The game takes place in an alternate timeline to the Starfighter comic, allowing for relationships, interactions and character developments outside the canon of that story. This allows for some surprising twists, as the narrative doesn't have to stay within the limits of adhering to the comic.
Starfighter is a ground-breaking example of western 18+ m/m work, and HamletMachine was a guest of honor at this year's Citrus Con, a virtual convention for BL/queer media. Starfighter: Eclipse is a noteworthy entry in the history of English-language 18+ queer visual novels, a small but ever-growing genre.
