School, often boarding school in particular, is often the backdrop for the more gothic kind of boys love visual novel. Here are some games featuring an academic setting.
NITRO CHiRAL's sweet pool is, like many games on this list, noteworthy for its macabre content. It centers around Youji, a young man who has begun to experience vivid hallucinations, and his classmates Tetsuo, Makoto, and Zenya, who all seem to have developed obsessions with him.
Shingakkou -Noli me tangere- from Pil/Slash is not translated into English, but well-known to BL fans regardless of its current unavailability in the West. Like sweet pool, it combines the religious school setting with a sinister cult.
Boys love visual novel Haiiro no Arcadia, or Gray Arcadia, from Japanese developer Peaky, is not translated into English at this stage. It takes place at an elite and very strict boarding school, where the entertainment activities of the students are closely restricted, as is going outside the grounds or home for vacation.
Pil/Slash title Masquerade ~Jigoku Gakuen SO/DO/MU~, soon to be released in English as Masquerade: Hell Academy, centers on several students, a teacher, and two outsiders who are all taken hostage within a school campus. The captor forces his captives to perform increasingly depraved acts in order to stay alive.
Gakuen Heaven: Boy's Love Scramble! from publisher Spray is not translated into English, although its anime and manga adaptations are. It takes place at Bell Liberty Academy (also known as BL Academy) where students particularly gifted in a variety of fields live and study together.
A Hand in the Darkness is a Spanish visual novel translated into English from Ertal Games. It is set at an exclusive boarding school during the Edwardian era. It, like most of the titles featured here, fits into the gothic genre.
